The Hypocrisy of Modern Society: First We Normalize, Then We Outrage
A Wake Up Call Against Normalizing the Wrong, Condemning the Inevitable
There’s a pattern that keeps repeating itself in our society. First, we indulge. Then we normalize. Then we celebrate. And when things spiral out of control, we wake up, act shocked, and start pointing fingers. But by then, the damage is already done.
Recently, a famous Indian YouTuber went on a so-called comedian’s show and cracked one of the most indecent ‘jokes’ I’ve ever heard. The backlash was immediate. People were disgusted. Outrage flooded social media. Everyone suddenly had a moral compass. But here’s the thing—this wasn’t an isolated incident. This ‘comedy’ show has been running for months. It thrives on vulgar language, disrespect, and double-meaning jokes. People watch it. They laugh, they share clips, they subscribe. And then one day, a line is crossed, and the same people who cheered for these influencers turn into their biggest critics.
But let’s ask the real question: Who is actually responsible? Is it just the ‘comedian’ and the YouTuber? Or is it the audience—the people who allowed this content to flourish in the first place? The truth is, this filth wouldn’t have survived if people didn’t consume it. The followers are the real enablers.
The Problem Runs Deeper Than This One Incident
This isn't just about one inappropriate joke. This is about a larger disease in our society. We keep feeding into negative things, normalizing them, and only when they turn toxic do we react with horror. The hypocrisy is astonishing. Let’s look at a few more examples:
Drinking and smoking: At first, it’s just ‘cool’ and ‘fun.’ Advertisements, movies, and influencers glorify it. If you don’t drink, you’re ‘old-fashioned’ or ‘boring.’ But then, alcoholism ruins families, young people fall into addiction, and liver diseases become common. Suddenly, society starts ‘raising awareness’—but isn’t it too late?
Using abusive language: It starts as casual slang. Then it becomes common even in conversations with elders. Soon, it’s in movies, songs, and even workplace discussions. People laugh it off—until someone crosses the line and insults someone they care about. Suddenly, everyone is ‘hurt’ and calling for respect. But wasn’t it ‘cool’ just a moment ago?
Dressing in an indecent way: Modesty is mocked. Those who dress decently are seen as outdated. The fashion industry keeps pushing limits, influencing younger generations to follow along blindly. But when cases of harassment and exploitation rise, the same society that encouraged this behavior suddenly asks, Why is this happening?
Cracking double-meaning jokes: At first, it’s ‘harmless fun.’ TV shows, influencers, and even office conversations promote it. But one day, a joke goes too far, and suddenly, everyone is ‘shocked.’ This gradual decline in morality destroys mutual respect in society.
Glorifying 14-hour workdays: We worship ‘hustle culture.’ If you don’t overwork yourself, you ‘lack ambition.’ But then people break down with mental health issues, and suddenly, companies start talking about ‘work-life balance.’ What happened to all the praise for ‘grinding’?
Measuring success by money alone: Society conditions us to believe that wealth equals worth. People sacrifice relationships, ethics, and health in pursuit of money. Then when they find themselves lonely and unhappy, they wonder what went wrong. The glorification of greed is what went wrong.
Eating out constantly: Fast food culture is celebrated. People mock traditional home-cooked food. But when young adults start developing diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, suddenly, health awareness campaigns pop up. Why not prevent it from the start?
This is Kaliyuga: The Age of Decline
The scriptures have warned us about this age—Kaliyuga. This is the time when morality will be lost, values will erode, and society will become chaotic. People will forget the true purpose of life. We are seeing this happen before our eyes.
Things are only going to get worse. Every generation is slipping further into indulgence and material obsession. People think they are ‘progressing,’ but in reality, they are losing their inner peace and clarity. The more society normalizes sin, the more suffering increases.
The Only Solution: True Spirituality
The only way to safeguard ourselves in this polluted world is to follow the teachings of true spirituality—what our sages and scriptures have given us. It may look outdated from the outside, but it is the only real way to live a peaceful and blissful life.
Chanting the holy names: The easiest and most powerful method to purify the mind and soul.
Living a disciplined life: Avoiding indulgence in toxic behaviors and maintaining self-restraint.
Following dharma: Living righteously, with honesty, kindness, and devotion.
Rejecting the illusions of modern trends: Understanding that temporary pleasures lead to long-term suffering.
Satsang (association with spiritually-minded people): Surrounding yourself with those who uplift your consciousness.
The world will continue to degrade. But we have a choice. We can either go along with the filth or protect ourselves by embracing spirituality. True progress is not in following every modern trend but in understanding what is truly valuable for our soul.
It’s time to wake up. It’s time to choose wisely. Let’s not wait until it’s too late.
